In this 6-hour Master Class, participants will have the opportunity to create spirit dolls that can be used in a group setting with people who have eating disorders, low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and body-related issues to enhance emotional and clinical development of the client. Participants will learn about the practical applications of social action art therapy, the Health at Every Size (HAES) approach, intuitive eating, and political art therapy as a way to address current cultural adversities surrounding the marginalization of bodies and eating disorders. A political model of art therapy puts an emphasis on the relationship between the self, the symptoms, and the culture in which they manifest, as well as calling for an awareness of power and value issues that are believed to impact those symptoms. The desire for increased social consciousness often guides the art making so that both the process and the product become the voice of the disenfranchised. In this way, art therapists are facilitating a public arena for the voice of the artist to be heard within the social context. The emotional release in the art making experience aids in healing, and the display of the art in a public environment may help to achieve a sense of power as the artist asserts his or her beliefs in the greater community.
