Never Trust The Living
02/12/2020 with Heather at Earthship Studios
Spending time with Heather is always such a joyful experience. Heather's forward thinking, body positive and sex positive attitude is such a refreshing thing and reminds me that more people can think like her if we try to support each other. Heather recently opened F.E.M. Shop a sex positive, sex store and it is such a fabulous venture! It was so exciting to see her display, her shop zine and all the exciting things she's focusing on. Work like this is increasingly important in a world where we seem to move toward more oppressive dynamics overtime.
It seems fitting to me always that Heather has created a Beetlejuice leg sleeve for me. She gets the weird, the strange, the not so main stream and appreciates my, "I hate the living" disgruntled attitude when she sees me post a ling work day.
This time we added some less recognizable images from Beetlejuice that happen to be my favorite. The little puppy who kills the Maitland's happens to be one of my favorite moments. We have this all American, country couple driving home from their local hardware store and the dog is the thing that would keep them from plummeting to their death. Isn't that in actuality how fragile all our existence is? The weight of a small dog, turning right instead of left, making choices that are ultimately life changing when they feel so small. Without this little dog the entire movie wouldn't have happened and that concept has aways felt so wild and meaningful to me (yes I can even find deep meaning in Beetlejuice).
Something not so deep is the shrunken head. He is iconic and really represents the comical side of this movie and the way in which we can poke fun at the difficult idea of death. He is totally silent, disproportionate and has the best eye-rolls. He reminds me not to be so serious, that living in fear of inevitability is unnecessary, and that you shouldn't piss of any kind of witch or witch doctor...you may end up as a shrunken head in the after life.
