Half Woman, Half Beast, All Real!

Tattoo by Sarah at Silence Is Golden Gallery 2/28/2020.

I met Sarah at her art show at Three Sheets a few weeks ago. I had heard about her from Heather (yes one of my tattoo ladies!) and seen her incredible work before, she'd been on my list of artist to look up and admittedly I lose track of my plans sometimes. It felt like kismet that we would get to meet in person. Sitting with Sarah I knew she would have to tattoo me. She was hilarious and blunt, honest and slightly grumpy, my favorite people to be around! Anyone who I can talk about getting older with and be grumpy about "the kids" and make jokes about being fat and I'm sold, that's the real shit in life. We get old, our bodies change, kids seem younger and less responsible, and sometimes I don't want to deal with it, glad I'm not alone in that!

I decided I wanted Sarah to do her own version of Boticelli's Birth of Venus. Sarah has a highly artistic style that exudes sexual confidence and fantasy that I felt would be perfect for this particular tattoo. She sent me a design of a Sader woman, plus size and sexy, standing in an oyster shell, it was more than I thought this design could be and knew instantly that this had to happen.

I headed over to Silence is Golden Gallery which is a pretty unique space. A large open space with lots of light, resembling an art gallery, with ton's of photographs on the wall. Their current exhibit highlights other peoples tattoo's, it was beautifully done and seemed to highlight the work currently being done on people in real time. The environment was relaxed and it was a nice change to see multiple women tattooing and apprentices hanging out, it felt comfortable and real.

Sarah jumped right in to getting this tattoo started, using a truly critical eye to make sure her art would translate into a tattoo. As she was tattooing I would look down in awe, her work looked like a drawing rather than a tattoo, it was incredible! All the while Sarah is trying to navigate my horrifically twitchy leg and my occasional deep breathing and fun facial expressions. We talked about our cats, my favorite topic of all time and our experience being fat women in our current culture. The whole while I was thinking, this should be recorded and used when I teach class next week. Sarah inspired the way this coming weeks lecture will be taught! She was hilarious and kind, empathetic and blunt, I appreciate any woman who is both kind and honest, blunt and unafraid to be real, unafraid to be the artist she knows she is. There is not much real left in the world, if you want to sit with a real person, who won't hold back, who will give you a truly incredible tattoo and who will be a true joy to be around, go see Sarah. You're missing out if you don't.
