Grave Robber Why Do I Even Bother?

Tattoo by Britney “Bee” Goodman at Tattoo Summer Camp with Mooncusser Tattoos in Provincetown, Ma

I feel very lucky to have met Bee and see the very magical pirate world of Mooncussers. I discovered them years ago when another lady tattooer did my wedding tattoo and then went off to summer camp. They had been a shop on my list for the last 7 years and this trip felt like the best time to experience it.

Bee was incredibly kind, humorous and seemed to appreciate all the weird things life has to offer that so many are too close minded to witness and enjoy. She designed the perfect celebration of Repo! The Genetic Opera.

This was a movie I discovered a year after it came out. I remember watching it and falling in live with it’s B-Movie campy feel and finding the depressing awe of the reality it offered. It was the first time I saw the truth of the capitalist nature of our medical system finally made so painfully clear. I didn’t know it at the time but years later I would specialize in eating disorder treatment in chronically ill people and become a massive advocate for the dismantling of our medical system.

When I look at this tattoo I don’t just see a reminder of this movie but of the deep-seeded lesson it represented and the work I now do. Let’s hope in the future our organs aren’t barcoded and sold to us on consignment in our hour of need.
